These stair risers are mosaiced onto Plexiglass rectangles with a hole drilled in each end of each one. The risers were installed after all the work was completed. The mosaic is a mixture of stained glass, vintage jewelry, broken plates, and various bits. Little children love to slowly climb them and point out snails, fish, butterflies, dragonflies, and turtles that live near the water.

Absolutely gorgeous! ...and truly inspiring. I found this site by searching for hints on using plexiglass for mosaics. I have never used it as a substrate and am thinking it would be a good choice for kids. I am curious what kind of glue you used?
Thanks for your interest. I used MAC glue. Until recently I ordered it on line, but now a local stained glass shop carries it.
That is incredibly beautiful. How many lbs of glass did you have to use?

Hello---so beautiful. I am about to embark on this "adventure!" Did you screw the plexiglass onto the existing wooden risers?

Yes, I screwed the Plexiglas onto the existing stair risers (which are sheetrocked). It was super easy. I found screws at Lowes that are the exact same color as the grout in the mosaic.
Hi - these are so beautiful - is there a reason you used plexiglass instead of a cement backer like wedi board? and I believe you adhered it to sheetrock - did you use thin set between the plexiglass and sheetrock. Are these removeable? or permanent - did you leave a space around each plexiglass to grout or work to edge - has anything cracked - grout or glass? Thanks.
