Fourth of July Owl

I just completed this example of the use of recycled materials in mosaics. The substrate is a ceramic owl figurine I bought at a thrift shop that had the tips of its tufts chipped. During the terrific hail storm we had back in April, one of my daughter's beautiful ceramic mushrooms was broken and I saved the pieces. Those are the brown and dark red. A ceramic soap dispenser of hers was leaking and that's the white around the eyes. Today, July 4, is her birthday, so this is one of her presents!

Artemis Night and Day

Here are the two of them, together.

Artemis is one of the major Greek goddesses, closely linked to the Roman goddess, Diana.  A fierce hunter as well as protector, Artemis is known as the goddess of the night, the huntress, the woodland goddess, the personification of the moon, and the eternal virgin. 

Dave's Mirror No. 2, finished today

In September, I salvaged an old mirror for our friend Dave (posted about it below) and now I have finished a second mirror, similar to the first, a little smaller.  I used compatible colors and style but different tiles.  I'm happy with it!

Dave's Mirror

29"x37" desperate old mirror from Mexico, originally mosaiced with rusty tin lizards, pinkish unsanded grout, and river rock.  Part of the mosaic had fallen out, one lizard was missing and one had a bent tail.  We first had to remove the rest of the original mosaic and reposition the lizards.  Wish I had taken a "before" picture.  Specifications were:  "I don't like pink that much, green is my favorite color, and save the lizards."

Bumping up my favorites

This is my favorite piece so far so I'm bumping it up in the queue to look at until I get this glass totem done. Whew, working on round glass is quite challenging. The GE Silicone II for windows and doors works great - - the pieces don't slide around at all - - but it is difficult to get out of the tube. My daughter gave me a neat little tool that fits on the bottom of the tube of silicone and rolls up as you go, so that helps enormously.
